About Us

Professor Mariyam Jameelah Ghazali is a highly accomplished Malaysian academic and Professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), currently leading the Centre for Materials Engineering & Smart Manufacturing (MERCU). Her distinguished career is centered on the field of Materials Engineering, where she specializes in the wear of materials, surface engineering, and materials processing. Professor Ghazali is an alumna of the University of Sheffield, UK, where she obtained her Ph.D. in Materials Engineering in 2005 , following her B.Eng. and M.Sc. degrees from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

 

Within UKM, she has held several pivotal administrative roles, including Assistant Dean (Entrepreneurship & Creativity) for the Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment from 2020 to 2025 and Chief Editor of the Jurnal Kejuruteraan. Internationally, her expertise is recognized through appointments as a Visiting Professor at Nagaoka University of Technology and a Visiting Researcher at Sophia University Tokyo.

 

She is a dedicated leader in her professional community, serving as a Co-Founder and Life Member of the Malaysian Tribology Society (MYTRIBOS) and as Vice President of the Asia Tribology Council from 2018 to 2024. Furthermore, her commitment to mentorship is evident in the remarkable number of postgraduate students she has supervised to completion, totaling 38 Ph.D. graduates and over 50 Masters' students. Her innovative work is documented across numerous publications and patents , and has earned her prestigious accolades, including the Excellent Tribology Paper Award from the Japanese Society of Tribologists in 2016.
